DUTCHPOTMailcast - It’s not too early to start thinking about holiday marketing — in fact, according to Brandweek, retailers and manufacturers who don’t start thinking now may not make their Christmas 2007 numbers. The Consumer Confidence Index indicated a sharp decline in confidence this season, thanks in part to the housing market/credit crisis and increasing fuel costs. Store traffic is down, and smart retailers are decreasing inventory to avoid markdowns later. Reuters recommends you “temper your projections”, like Target and Talbots are doing.

The good news? The season will be great for online shopping, with 84 percent of consumers spending as much or more online as they did during the 2006 holiday season.
According to a recent Message Systems press release:

According to Doug Berger, director of Member Communications for the Direct Marketing Association, “For every dollar spent on email marketing in 2007, marketers can expect an estimated $48.29 ROI. Without a doubt, email marketing achieves the greatest ROI of all marketing channels we look at.”

With the DMA’s lucrative projected ROI on email marketing for 2007, marketers are expected to increasingly rely on email for critical sales promotions to attract the growing number of online shoppers, particularly for the upcoming holiday season. A sharp increase in outbound messages over normal activity can put a strain on a marketer’s email system, resulting in slower delivery. Further, a marketer’s inability to comply with ISP deliverability requirements can result in undelivered messages and strained relationships.

There are several things retailers can do to prepare their email delivery system for the holiday season. Whether email campaigns are handled in-house or outsourced to an email service provider (ESP), a high-performance email solution with virtual IP capability, bounce automation, real-time reporting, and tools to match ISP sending requirements are key considerations for achieving high email delivery rates and maintaining a good reputation with ISPs.

While the Election TV ad wars rage, my chair is hot, it's busy season for us as a company.
We're adding more local clients, gone into the Caribbean and the USA has come knocking. We're thankful and happy that election is less than a week away.

Regardless of who wins, what is needed is a govt that's serious about BUSINESS. Creating an environment where startups are easy, growth is a done deal, tax incentives are abundant, bureacracy and corruption is minimal, our nation's assets are preserved so that Jamaicans are their prime beneficiaries.

Good luck to the PNP and JLP! Let's see what business will be like on the other side of Sept 3rd.

Yep, where we are, we have light and water. I am using Dial Up to get online and check email and Susan is having DSL connection issues too. It's been three days after Hurricane Dean SouthCoast swiped us- but yes, we're open for business...for the most part. Our Virtual Office service is not yet up, but we're in touch with our Clients ( the one's who have light, water, internet and phone service) to see where things are by mobile phone and email.

But even as being online, checking email and having your mobile phone service up and running means WE are open for business, I know it will be still a few more days more maybe for us ALL( clients, service providers etc) to be really open for business.

Cheers to being back in the saddle.

What a rollercoaster ride we've had. Here in Jamaica, we watched Dean making a SouthCoast B line for us; we battened down, shopped for batteries, flashlights, tarpaulin; we stored water and prayed for the best. Now that Hurricane Dean has past and we can see almost all the damage done and not done, I feel both sad and glad.

Sad that the South Coast neighbourhoods, small hotels, business places took a good whallop - some houses swept into or swallowed by the sea, massive floodwater damage, possessions soaked and lost, roofs and stock blown away- homes lost, personal and business lives interrupted.I t's going to be a challenge to reolocate, rebuild, get back to a daily routine of living and doing business there. But it will be done, must be done.

And I am glad about the...gottta get up, clean up and get going spirit. No 1988 Hurricane Gilbert mailaise here. Most people seem to understand that a day lost in discomfort, complaining and woe is me, is also a day lost - of living comfortably, relaxing, doing business and making money.

Minutes to 7 am, while out touring after checking on my family and close friends, I saw residents themselves (or hiring walkabout men with electric saws for hire), already beginning to saw and cut offending tree limbs that burst power and telephone lines, or those that fell and blocked streets. Fast Food outlets powered by big and powerful generators started to open up to feed the need for hot breakfasts and ice cold drinks and a feeling that all is well for the most part, we're alive - now how about a Bacon double whopper and large Pepsi to go with it all.

I drove to Port Maria, St Mary and Ocho Rios, St Ann on Tuesday morning to check on relatives and to exorcise my cabin fever and in some places it's almost like nothing happened. You saw the usual foliage damage along junction road, some zinc roofs from corner shops on the side of the road. But it's when you got to the St Mary Banana Estate you saw why farmers will weep for a few more weeks. Hundreds of acres of banana trees where bowed and broken from the 145mph winds.

The Port Maria and the Coastal road into Ochi however was it's usual bustle of people, dusty, dry and sunny self. In Ochi I settled into Island Village's Coco Brown's coffee shop for a cold beer and a quiet read to settle my nerves, my laptop being charged in Port Maria in a friend's office with a back up generator, it's like nothing had happened here. Island Village was open for business and ready to receive a big cruise ship the next day. The place was pretty much empty, but it offered the quiet, clean, back in order environment I needed to personally finish shifting gears from bracing for a Hurricane, back what;s next in building my businesses.

Sad and Glad, I guess that'll be the common sentiment for a while as we collectively mop up, wipe down, reconnect, rebuild and make ready again our personal lives, our businesses.

Online advertising will be bigger than newspaper advertising in the U.S. by 2011, according to a new forecast. Veronis Suhler Stevenson's (VSS) annual media research report says money going to online ads will grow by over 21 percent each year for the next four years, when it will reach $62 billion, while newspaper advertising will be worth $60 billion. Web advertising overtook newspapers in the UK in 2006, when spend surged 41 percent against print's 0.2 percent to pass the £2 billion ($4 billion) mark, according to the Internet Advertising Bureau. source:Via FT.com and USA Today.

Jamaican/Caribbean Context: ALready the shift has started in Jamaica. With companies small to large, brands familiar and new seeking more targeted media that assures them full face time with consumers. TV and print ad spend is shifting online. The trick is not many site publishers have been taking the opportunity to put themselves in front of brands to get some of that ad spend. Not even the major newspapers and online mags have taken this super seriously. Even so, there are fresh signs of movements in that area.
1. The ad network BC Ad Group, our of ATL headed by a Jamaican is about launch and at least two others are in the pipeline.
2. Email marketing is going to get more competitive in the next 30 days.

From Febuary to July this year...whooaa ...talk about a rollercoaster. Collections were slow (try getting a cheque out some Jamaican companies on time); had to ask a member of staff to resign because he started a business in direct competition with us and wanted to remain employed with us while building it.(lol...I know...he was pretty good at what he did too);we owe some money(in the low four figures and non interest bearing, so it's nothing to stress about), so a couple of people are pissed off with me, us, the company; one staff member resigned and who remained we put them contract and expanded our talent pool beyond our shores; we doing the virtual office thing - one in Kingston and another in Atlanta..

Now the company is on a fast turnaround with new business out of Jamaica, ATL,Trinidad.WHEW!! We're still here. But clearly, the Black Range Rover Sport Edition with satellite radio may not be coming this year...maybe 2008!!! (smiling)

Running a business is not for the faint of heart indeed, you gotta make tough decisions, risk pissing off a few people and not caring what they have to say or think about you - yet wallowing in the fact that you made the best decision at the time, clearly evidenced now in the business fast growing its way into a higher level of profitablity.

I am now reminded why it's called Growing Pains. And didn't some other person warned that it can be lonely at the top. Let me tell you, there's nothing like a community of entrepreneurs to validate you and make you feel less touched in the head, they act as a nice reminder of why you spring out of bed so early in the mornings, sacrifice and risk beyond some people's understanding(like cooking linguini on a one burner hot plate and owning only 4 pairs of jeans). People who've never done it I guess, may never understand the fun and the fear, the passion for ideas, the fever that always accompanies those startup times and that total sense of fulfilment when things come together just right.

We've been through a thick and rough patch these past couple of months - still wouldn't change a thing for this journey now as Maya Angelou said. It's just business and man am I enjoying it...rollercoaster and all. Bring it on.

Marketing your business online is now a business necessity. One way to reach a core base of new and existing customers is through a strong e-mail marketing campaign. For more info click here. Here are some tips to make sure your e-mails get read, and get results.

•Know your goals for the campaign. Should customers buy your product or service, subscribe to newsletters, use your coupon or special offer, or visit you in person? Identifying these goals will guide effective messaging in your e-mails.

•Target your audience. Resist using the shotgun approach. Response rates are typically in the low percentages, so ensuring the right people get the message will minimize your expenses.

•Keep copy concise. Explain the offering in the first two sentences. Attention spans are low, and customers want to know what they are getting without having to read long descriptions.

•Test the campaign on friends and family before sending it to customers. If your grandmother opens the e-mail and knows what to do, chances are your customers will too.

Then hit send, sit back, and watch your bottom line grow.

If you are any thing sort of a work aholic, driven by 'feel good' results and the occasional pat on the back from people in your life that really don't count...change ur ways...if u are married, spend lots of time with ur kids and ur life partner....if ur parents are still alive...go visit them and tell them things about yourself that u THINK they are not interested in hearing about. In other words...inhale something other than senseless drive and let go.

What is ‘Spec?’
“Spec” means requests like "do something now and show me" or "Do a quick concept first" In other words, Spec is any work requested by which no fair and reasonable fee has been agreed upon.

And the problem is...what?
Well for starters specing requires us designers and developers to invest time, resources brain power and creative juices, all with no forthcoming guarantee of payment.

Shouldn't a client to “try before they buy?”
Maybe so. But look deeper and you will see realize that professional graphic design and web development is about creating custom solutions, not cookie-cutter concepts. Further more, if you have taken the time to put together a body of work or your portfolio, then that should speak for itself along with client references.

A designer's or developers “process” is more than simply banging away at a keyboard or click clicking a mouse. It’s more about understanding the nature of a design, the communication challenge and then using one’s brain to find the appropriate and effective solution.

Great food and technology help drive my businesses.
As a tech entrepreneur whose office is a Macbook plus two phones, one Digicel and a My Virtual Office phone that works locally and on which my Miami and Atlanta numbers ring, WiFi (wireless internet) is crucial.whether at home, in the small office or wherever I decide to work from that day. The fact is where I have breakfast, and lunch especially, tends to be heavily influenced by where has free and consistent wifi (wireless internet) and of course good food. I seldom have time or inclination to cook anymore.

For me there are not enough places in Kingston that offers free WiFi, food and drink and comfortable non- traditional cool work space, and there's a heavy and ready market for it.
The digital lifestyle is here and growing fast among young entrepreneurs, young professionals, expatriates and of course college students - who are connected to work and school via laptops, cellphones and wireless internet access. These road warriors and members of the blossoming digerati need more places to get things done.

Now there are a few places in Kingston that I know of (most I have tried). There is Cannonball Café's two locations - New Kingston and Loshusan Plaza; Susie's two locations - Southdale Plaza and Orchid Village; Cuddy'z in New Kingston; Häagen Daz, also in Losushan; Café What's On at Devon House; Christopher's Jazz Café; Game Yaad; Indie's Pub and Grill. The latter four I've not tested for WiFi access, good food and comfy space.

From the others I've road-tested the two places that come out on top are Susie's and Cuddy'z. Susie's WiFi is consistent at both locations and I've been there for early Saturday morning breakfast at the Liguanea branch or lingering late lunch at the Barbican branch.

I love Cuddy'z, where else can you go on a Saturday night and see a group of laptop lingerers in a corner surfing, sipping, nibbling and chatting? The catch with Cuddy'z WiFi is you can't use it from its very popular booths; it's limited to the bar area nearest the mall side entry where the signal is strongest.

The digital lifestyle is growing fast and the food and beverage industry can tap into it a number of ways. I say all this to let more eateries and food and beverage marketers know that there is a need for this kind of service and space. How about a food or beverage brand like Red Bull opening up such a place, branding it, offering Red Bull as its complimentary drink, add food, free WiFi, comfy chairs, sofas, sell merchandise and others of its partners, plus all the digital gadgets one could stand, even a mini meeting space, but most importantly letting the people determine the rhythm of the place - make all feel welcome and stressless even if they don't buy a toothpick. Someone, please, steal this idea.

What is Web2.0 ?
What's all the hype about Web 2.0, and why should you care? Web2.0 the concept, the culture, the industry after all a slippery beast. No two pundits seem to agree on what it is, but almost all will nod heads on, is how it has and will continue to affect your consumers and consequently your business.

What is clear; Web 2.0 represents an important shift in the way digital information is created, shared, stored, distributed, and manipulated. In the years ahead, it will have a significant impact in the way businesses use both the Internet and enterprise-level IT applications.

Picture this 2007, somewhere on the Web:
New Web sites and services, the collective creative energy of countless indiviuals is virtually popping off screen. They're bringing together their own services from customizable Web sites and Lego-style pieces of Web software. By the millions, they're gathering and distributing their own news with blogs and podcasts, creating customized article and photo feeds from their favorite sites and even adding footnotes with helpful text tags that others can search for on the Web site del.icio.us.

They're producing their own entertainment on video, social-networking, game, and photo-sharing sites such as Yahoo's Flickr. At MySpace.com, some 21 million monthly visitors spend up to several hours a day sharing their thoughts, photos, and music with friends on personalized home pages.

In the Caribbean, there is vibesconnect.com network of sites and Caribbeanmassive.com the Caribbean social networking site. It’s more about participating, socializing, interacting, creating, sharing, collaborating. They Google (GOOG ), Flickr, blog, contribute to Wikipedia, Socialtext it, Meetup, post, subscribe, feed, annotate, and above all share. In short the web is increasingly less about nouns and names of places and more about verbs. The Web is a destination, a place to get things done.

Why it matters now?
All of this has major implications for the future of information technology and personal communications. Web 2.0 creates new ways for large groups of people to collaborate and exchange information while reducing the importance of the PC itself as an information-delivery platform. When both the applications and the data that feed into them reside online, a variety of devices can function as information terminals: your smart phone, your music player, the computer you use today, and whatever computer you'll use next year. Web 2.0 not only makes all this possible, it also makes it inexpensive and easy to deploy. In short desktop gives way to web-based, fueled by increased bandwidth availability at lower costs that has made usage jump and continuously increasing at a merry clip.

In a Web 2.0 world, instead of merely reading a newsletter, for example, you can publish one of your own. If you're frustrated by the way your current software compiles data, Web 2.0 services can make it easier to display the data in a different way. Having versioning problems with shared documents? Web 2.0 allows groups of people to work on a document or spreadsheet simultaneously, while in the background a computer keeps track of who made what changes where and when. Have a project and your project people are strewn across three cities, use a web-based project management too and you’re singing.

In general, some of the key characteristics of Web 2.0 are:
•	Web-based applications can be accessed anywhere and 24/7
•	Simple applications solve specific problems eg blinksale.com, highrisehq.com
•	Content is King -value lies in content, not the software used to display content.
•	Data can be readily shared.
•	Employees and customers can access and use tools on their own.
•	Social tools encourage people to create, collaborate, edit, categorize, exchange, and promote information

Why It Should Matter to You
Although many of the most famous Web 2.0 tools are consumer applications — YouTube, Facebook, and MySpace, quickly comes to mind — there are two main reasons why Web 2.0 is relevant to business people.

The first has to do with reducing the costs associated with traditional enterprise applications. As any IT manager will tell you, it's expensive to install, configure, maintain, and upgrade essential software on personal computers and company servers — and even more so if you have lots of employees with lots of different computing needs. Web 2.0 tools eliminate much of this hassle and expense because Web 2.0 applications reside on servers maintained by the vendors themselves.

Thanks partially to Web 2.0 technologies, the barriers between a company (including its CEO, board, managers, and employees) and the consumer are now razor thin. Taking advantage of this reality will require a major attitude shift on the part of many companies and the people who run them. Hierarchy and direct control are giving way to notions of collaboration, creativity, transparency, and mass participation, and the effects of this change are just beginning to make themselves felt.

Web 2.0 offers many potential benefits for the business world — but it's a different world indeed. For example, in 2006, General Motors invited consumers to create their own commercials for the Chevrolet Tahoe SUV, using GM-supplied video and the creators' choice of music and text. The effort generated plenty of online traffic, plenty of buzz, and (as might have been expected) plenty of commercials that GM wished had never seen the light of day. But compared to a traditional ad campaign, the effort was inexpensive, it exposed the Chevy Tahoe to a new audience, and it worked — sales of the vehicle were strong compared to the same period the year before.

In a nutshell
Philosophically, Web 2.0 is all about simplicity. Practically, it removes that that line between computing from stand-alone computers — a shift that dramatically reduces software deployment and administrative costs. It uses common software protocols to foster free exchange of information between different tools and groups of users. Lastly, because it encourages large-scale collaboration, Web 2.0 facilitates new forms of problem-solving that can provide business managers with valuable ideas and insights.

Taste then Buy
The hype surrounding Web 2.0 can be off-putting and confusing and can create challenges to any manager who is evaluating Web 2.0 services for use inside their company. The fuzzy nature of the term means that some vendors quickly label themselves "Web 2.0," for marketing purposes. Before making any investment in a Web 2.0-based tool, do your due diligence – taste it, ttry it before you buy into it. Create a company blog or email newsletter, start an in house project wiki, use an online project management service, checkout online invoicing services.

SIDE BAR
• Buzz phrase coined in 2004, by Tim O'Reilly of tech publisher O'Reilly Media
• Definition: Web 2.0 is a set of Web-based software services that encourage users to become more involved in the creation and manipulation of data.
• Enabling Technologies: AJAX, blogs, RSS, wikis, XML, Atom
• Prominent Web 2.0 brands: digg, Flickr, Google Apps, LinkedIn, Salesforce.com, Socialtext, YouTube, Wikipedia,Facebook
• Investment: American Web 2.0 startups attracted $844 million in venture capital investment during 2006, more than twice as much as in 2005.
